I don't really think it's all that bad to want popularity, but pageviews are not synonymous with that. The reason I say that is because some people just act as an Encyclopedia Dramatica and attract negative attention, which means more views on their page. That's not popularity, that's just a pointless online existence. However, since popularity can be thought of as how many people drop by one's page I guess there are people who confuse the two.
